Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer

Overview

Scotts Halts is the most widely available granular pre-emergent at big-box stores. It uses pendimethalin as its active ingredient and provides approximately 90 days of pre-emergent protection against crabgrass and other annual grassy weeds.

How It Works

Pendimethalin creates a barrier in the soil surface that prevents weed seed germination. Apply with a broadcast spreader and water in. The granular form makes application simple — no sprayer needed.

Tradeoffs

Scotts Halts is more expensive per square foot than prodiamine WDG and has a shorter residual period (~90 days vs ~120 days). The main advantage is convenience: granular application with a broadcast spreader is simpler than mixing and spraying a liquid product. Most experienced lawn care enthusiasts graduate to prodiamine WDG for the cost savings.

Important Warning

Pendimethalin stains concrete and driveways a bright orange color. Always blow or sweep granules off hard surfaces immediately after application. Do not apply in windy conditions that could carry granules onto driveways, sidewalks, or patios.
